Offender Treatment


 

A composite of National and State Standards and Norms for the Treatment of Sex Offenders

  • Relapse Prevention Program
    - Highly structured and designed specifically to prevent relapse
    - Average of 1.5 to 3 years of active treatment
    - Approximately 1 year of follow-up/aftercare

  • Structured Program Modules
    - Areas of treatment focus designed to prevent relapse
    - Most programs have 6 to 8 modules
    - Examples include: The Offense Cycle, Arousal Control, Victim Empathy, Behavior Modification, Cognitive Restructuring, Sex Education, and Relationship Skills

  • Group Therapy
    - Core of treatment
    - 1.5 hours at least weekly

  • Individual and Family Therapy
    - Available to enhance treatment

  • Polygraph Testing
    - Maintenance Tests at least every 4-6 months
    - A Sexual History Test to establish history of offending

  • Active communication and collaboration with probation officer and polygraphist to manage the offender

  • Formal Graduation Criteria

Program Goals & Offender Program Completion Criteria

In order to successfully complete a relapse prevention program, offenders should...

  • Have attended therapy on a consistent basis

  • Have completed structured, focused assignments on a consistent basis

  • Have demonstrated verbally and or in writing an understanding of the program's modules

  • Be able to describe the sexual offense cycle

  • Take responsibility for offense

  • Understand the effects of their behaviors on victims

  • Report understanding and practicing healthy sexual behaviors vs. risky sexual behaviors

  • Be able to recognize and actively combat pro-offending attitudes

  • Have learned and be able to utilize coping behaviors and interventions that interrupt the offense cycle

  • Have learned healthy communication and relationship skills

  • Have demonstrated stability within the community
